EXPEDITION INFO UPDATES

12/5/2002

Course Arrival/Departure Info: We'll be meeting at the Southwest Airlines baggage claim area. Near the exit door. 1:30 PM. A couple of our team members will be arriving at 1:30.

You can book your return tickets beginning 9:30 AM January 17, 2003. We will drop you off at 7:30 AM.

Food & Lodging Expenses: All food and lodging expenses are covered as part of the course fee.

Cash, Changing Money and Personal Expenses: You can use an ATM card in Mexico to get Pesos from your USA checking/savings account. The exchange rate is good. We recommend bringing about $100 (US) cash for emergencies. You'll also need $20 (US) to purchase a Mexican tourist card. Personal expenses include clothes washing, soda, personal munchies, internet cafe, gifts, Mexican tourist card.

First Seminar: Our first seminar will be on Ezcurra, E. M. (1998). Conservation and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in Baja California:An Overview. San Diego Dialogue’s Forum Fronterizo policy luncheon series, San Diego, CA. When your fall semester classes are over this will make a good read, maybe on the airplane to San Diego.

This paper can be downloaded at http://www.sddialogue.org/pdfs/Baja%20Natural%20Resources%20doc.pdf

Dr. Exequiel Ezcurra is on leave of absence as director of the Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias to serve as President of the National Institute of Ecology in Mexico.

For more information on Dr. Ezcurra: http://www.sdnhm.org/research/ezcurra.html.

Student-Directed Learning Activity: We'd like each student to lead a learning activity that has relevance to the mission of the expedition. Please contact David Silverberg (silverberg@alum.mit.edu) regarding your ideas for the learning activity. For example, one of our students will be leading an activity on the role of the USA in Colorado River Water Management. If you'd like suggestions for a paper to lead a seminar on just ask. Alternatively you could choose content related to expeditionary learning or team building.

Carrhardts!?: Jeans or your favorite field pants will do. Something tough and good for the desert thornscrub.

Clothes Washing? About once a week.

Showers? When we can.

Emergency Info: We will frequently be "off-the-grid". Please inform your family that should an emergency arise, the best way to reach you is: (1) to leave a message at
the ELI office 520-731-3374, (2) to email you at something like yahoo.com, and (3) to email silverberg@alum.mit.edu.

EMail: I recommend opening a Yahoo or Hotmail account. It's a personal decision. I have personally never had a problem with Yahoo (well...except once in a remote village in Laos). At the basic level, the Yahoo or Hotmail account is free. For a relatively inexpensive annual upgrade you can have all your email from other accounts forwarded to your Yahoo account. We will
be able to check our email at internet cafes once in a while. These cafes
typically charge a few dollars/hour. This would come out of your pocket
money.
