Valle de los Cirios Area de Proteccion de Flora y Fauna http://www.cicese.mx/~vcirios/ingles/index.htm Allured by tales of mythical treasures the European conquerors that first came to Baja California saw only a barren and inhospitable land. Ironically, in light of todays tremendous environmental degradation the central portion of the long peninsula shines as one of the best-conserved natural treasures on Earth. Valley of the Cirios is one of 129 federally protected natural areas in México. This is a spectacular desert in the central part of the Baja California peninsula. The protected area is named for a notable inhabitant, the cirio, one of the most picturesque plants on Earth. In the following pages we present the general characteristics of Valle
        de los Cirios.
El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve http://www.vizcaino.gob.mx/ivizchome.html El Vizcaíno, largest Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, is located in the center of the Baja California Peninsula. Bordered on the east by the Gulf of California and to the west by the Pacific Ocean, the scenery ranges from the rugged San Francisco Mountains to wide plains which break onto the complex lagoon systems of the Pacific. The Grey Whale, the Bighorn Sheep, and the Peninsular Pronghorn are doubtless the most charismatic species of the Reserve. The climatic conditions and the long drought periods make the Vizcaíno one of the most extreme spots on the planet.

The Nature Conservancy - Baja, Mexico Program http://nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/mexico/work/art8618.html Where the desert meets the sea, this region is characterized by rugged coastlines, cardon cacti, sandy beaches, coastal lagoons, coral reefs and palm oases. The Baja California Peninsula and Gulf of California boast some of the most unique terrestrial and marine environments in the world.
San Diego Natural History Museum The mission of the Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias is
to conduct field explorations and collections-based research; preserve
specimens and associated information that document our region's natural
history and biodiversity; provide scientific knowledge about the natural
history of our region; and to support the San Diego Natural History Museum's
mission by laying the scientific foundation for its operation and programs.
The museum has developed a nice website on the Sea of Cortés to
accompany its giant-screen film "Ocean Oasis". It has a "field
guide" section with some wonderful information about Baja California:
Sea Turtle Conservation Network of the Californias http://baja.seaturtle.org/about.shtml First Meeting of the Sea Turtle Conservation Network of the Californias
Held in Loreto, BCS, Mexico. Sea turtle conservation in Baja California,
Mexico presents many unique challenges. Among them is the vastness of
the peninsula, long distances between communities, intense fishing activities,
a growing tourism industry and a persistent demand for turtle products.
Coordinated regional research and recovery efforts have been notable but
few and communication between researchers, conservationists and fishermen,
key to sea turtle recovery, has been lacking. Five species of sea turtle
are known to inhabit Baja California waters - which provide important
foraging and developmental areas for turtles from as far away as Japan
and southern Mexico - and all five species are considered endangered or
threatened. In order to be successful, recovery efforts must involve the
numerous fishing communities along the length of the 1000 mile-long peninsula
and support enforcement of existing conservation laws. With this in mind,
the first meeting of the Sea Turtle Conservation Network of the Californias,
STCNC (Grupo Tortuguero de las Californias-GTC) was held on 23 January
1999 at the office of the non-profit Grupo Ecologista de Antares, A.C.
        (GEA) in Loreto, BCS.
Baja Life Magazine http://www.bajalife.com/ecowatch/ Baja Life Magazine supports the protection and management of Baja California's magnificent natural resources. As a means to provide information to our readers, our staff at Baja Life Online has created this website to continually update you on the many programs being developed to balance the use of the resources; protecting them in a way that sustains and provides for existing and future populations.
