WORK AND RELATED EXPERIENCES

International Development Consultant, May 1994 - Present

Presently I work as a freelance consultant and spend major portion of my time in experimental (voluntary) work related to rural living and development. In this respect I have been involved in the experimentation of low cost housing and solar heating systems affordable by villagers in Nepal. Additionally, I have also been engaged as a short-term consultant with various international and national agencies during this period.

UNDP Planner & Chief, United Nations Database & Documentation Office (UNIDATA), UNDP/Kabul, February 1990 - March 1994.
Initiated data and information collection activities for a computerised database on all sectors in Afghanistan. As the UNDP Planner advised UNDP and other UN agencies based in Kabul on the reconstruction and rehabilitation programs and planning. Established UNIDATA offices in Peshwar, Mazar-e-Sheriff, Quetta and Islamabad. Also supervised the work of a large number of national and international professionals based in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Consultant, Government of Pakistan and USAID/Pakistan, November 1987 - July 1989

During the twenty months tenure as a consultant in Pakistan, I worked with the Ministry of Food Agriculture and Co-operatives (MINFAC) and various offices within USAID and completed the following assignments:

· Co-ordinated the task of a group of consultants in formulating country-specific policies and procedures in the area of human resources development.

· Reviewed the agriculture component of the Baluchistan Area Development Project (BALAD) and conducted a feasibility study in agriculture sector in Makran for the second phase of the project.

· Assessed an institution-specific human resource and development needs in agriculture research and training in Pakistan.

· Conducted a study concerning the management of the USAID/Pakistan funded human resources development programs and identified institutional constraints.

Secretary, His Majesty's Government of Nepal, National Commission on population. Singh Durbar, Kathmandu, February 1982-may 1987.

Managed and directed the work of a large professional and administrative staff. Directed several research projects with a view of formulating strategy and policy options in the social services sector. Research areas included agriculture, environment, health and women's development. Inter-sectorial policies and programs on population and development were a direct result of such research. Established framework for inter-agency cordination of programs on population and development sectors for the Seventh Five -Year Plan. Worked closely with donor agencies to secure funds for these programs.

Joint Secretary, His Majesty's Government of Nepal, National Planning Commission, Population Division, Singh Durbar, Kathmandu, January 1978-1982.

Developed a viable multi-disciplinary program on population and development. Also developed appropriate analytical systems for the evaluation of existing programs. Defined social sector research agenda and policy options for the Sixth five-year Plan of HMG-Nepal. Worked closely with major donors in population and development sectors.

Consultant (Research and Training), University of California-Berkeley. Berkeley, California, September 1975 - August 1977.

Worked as a member of the Technical Assistance Team and assisted the Ministry of Health, His Majesty's Government of Nepal in developing research and training programmes in agriculture, population, community participation and women's development in Nepal. Designed integrated training programs for local leaders in order to enhance participation in population and development programs at the grass-roots level. Also designed and conducted Training of Trainers (TOT) in health sector using participatory approach to induce change among the trainees themselves.

Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Grinnel College. Grinnel, Iowa, September 1973 - June 1974.

Taught various courses on cultural anthropology. Developed and taught a course on Developmental Anthropology as well.


Language and Area Studies Instructor, Peace Corps/Nepal, December 1966 - January 1967.

Taught Nepali language and provided information regarding the religio-cultural and economic aspects of life in Nepal to Peace Corps trainees at training sites based in California.

Research Assistant, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Nepal, January 1965 - November 1966.

Assisted Professor Christopher Von Furer Haimendorf in the ethno-economic survey of the hill people of Western Nepal. Professor Haimendorf used the survey data to write the book Himalayan Traders (published by John Murray, 1975) and the book was dedicated to me and other researchers who assisted his field -work in Nepal.
